Loading bay door heaters in Preston take a beating that the rest of the warehouse never sees. Every time a shutter lifts, a wall of Lancashire air hits the dock. If the door heater, air curtain or radiant strip above that opening is dirty, in lockout or aimed at the roof, the bay goes cold in minutes — and the rest of the heating plant then runs flat out trying to recover.
This is not a generic warehouse heating guide. It is the winter job on the threshold: the heaters that live over docks at Walton Summit, Bamber Bridge, Leyland and Chorley.
A dock is a designed hole in the building. In winter that means:
Warm air from the warehouse pours out at high level. Cold air slides in at floor level. A heater that worked “well enough” in November cannot hold a January dock if the burner is weak or the fan is full of dust.
Sites mix kit. Typical winter-critical appliances:
The wrong question is “do we have a heater?” The right question is “does it still cover the opening when the door is up?”
AAC Gas service gas-fired door heaters, air curtains and the radiant or unit heaters that back them up. We are Gas Safe registered (562186), based in Higher Walton, and used to working around live docks.
Blown-air door heaters need a working fan and a clean heat exchanger. In a freeze they heat air that immediately leaves. Radiant heat at the dock warms people and the floor even while the door is open, provided the heater is clean, correctly aimed, and not in lockout.
At least annually, and always before the heating season. Dock units work harder than warehouse heaters and ingest more dirt from the yard.
Some difference is normal with the door open. A raw dock with a dead or misaimed heater is not. Service the bay kit rather than turning the whole warehouse up.
Yes. We plan visits around trunking windows where we can. For a failed dock in a freeze, call the 24/7 line.

If your Preston warehouse heating “is fine except the bays,” the bays are the job. Book loading bay and door heater servicing now, not after the leveller ices over.
