Do not use them as a cheap way to ignore a failed building heater if the whole floor must be warm. Plaques create comfort islands. That is a feature in a freeze, and a complaint if you expected even heat.

Winter problems specific to high-intensity radiant

  • Aiming. A heater pointed at the roof or shutter does not heat the fitter.
  • Clearances. Stock piled into the exclusion zone is a fire and overheat risk.
  • Gas pressure and ignition. Cold, long pipe runs and regulators show up as weak glow or delayed ignition.
  • Reflectors and plaques. Dust, overspray and damaged ceramics cut output.
  • Flues and ventilation. Do not block ventilation to keep the cold out.

Winter servicing and aiming checklist

  1. Stand in the working position with the heater on (safely, after an engineer confirms it is fit to run). Heat on shoulders and floor is the test.
  2. Check ceramics, reflectors, guards and hangers for damage, soot and sag.
  3. Confirm ventilation and clearances have not been eaten by winter clutter.
  4. Include plaques on the same visit as unit heaters.
  5. Do not DIY-adjust gas. Pressure, injectors and flame picture are Gas Safe work.
